Our Girls Perform Well at the Zane Cup
With the Blue Angels streaking low and fast overhead, the Eclipse 2000 girls teams wrapped up their 2009-2010 soccer year by participating in the Zane Stephl Memorial Cup tournament at Russian Jack Sports Complex in Anchorage, July 29-August 1, joining five other teams in the U11 Girls bracket. Starburst placed 5th and Starblast placed 4th, with many teetering moments during preliminary round play.
Both teams defeated the Chugiak Lightening Bolts and both teams lost to the Full Force squad who they've come to know by its player's first names this summer. Starburst lost to eventual runner-up CISC Velocity White in a marvelously played match and wrapped up their tournament with a 1-2 record. Starblast lost a nail-biter to eventual champions AK Rush Nike and also posted a 1-2 record during preliminary play, but had a slightly better goals-to-goals-against ratio and was able to advance to the semi-finals. There they lost a rematch with the AK Rush squad which was a "nail remover." It went the full 50 minutes, followed by two tense, 10-minute overtime periods, and was tied 1-1 when it was settled by best-of-five penalty kicks, 1-2 in favor of AK Rush Nike.
The players' parents and supporters, along with Coach Kara and Coach Rory, witnessed many, many great moments on the soccer pitch (and in the sky!) and wish to thank everyone who helped to make this first season such a success.
StarBURST reaches U12G Finals of 2010 Far North tournament(!) after meeting StarBLAST in semi-finals!! The Starburst players hit their stride racking up a cumulative score of 15-6 during preliminary round play against MSC Polaris U10, CISC Velocity Blue U11, KPSC Rowdies U11, and Full Force U11. They met their Eclipse peers during semi-final play, beating Starblast 4-2. Starblast played "up" in a U12 bracket and without a few key players yet played hard and played together. Despite beating Velocity Blue 3-1 on Friday, Starburst lost to Blue in the finals 0-3. The Coaches were proud of their lady athletes on both teams!!
Another
strong tournament showing at the Fairbanks Midnight Sun "The Last
Frontier" Tourney June 17-20!
The Eclipse teams once
again performed well at the tournament held here in town this last weekend,
with the Starblast girls taking Second Place and the Starburst girls finishing
Fourth! As in the Alaska Airlines Cup
tournament, both squads lost to the eventual champions, the Anchorage Cook Inlet Soccer Club Velocity
Blue, in the preliminary round by identical 3-0 scores, but were able to slip
into the semi-finals based on their strong play against the other teams. In the semi-finals, the Burst had to face Velocity
Blue again and were beaten, while the Blast played the Anchorage Rush Nike team
that had beaten them for the AA Cup in Anchorage. The Blast responded with its best game of the
tournament and got some revenge, beating the Rush 4-0.In the championship match, it was a close,
defensivestruggle until Velocity Blue
scored a couple of late goals to win 3-1.
With two outdoor tournaments
now under their belts, the girls are beginning to get a feel for high pressure
games against teams that play to win and for the type of effort and
determination that will be required to beat those teams!
Congratulations to the Eclipse 2000
for a great showing at the
Alaska Airlines Cup Tournament
in Anchorage, AK June 3-6, 2010!!
The Starburst girls finished 5th overall
and the Starblast girls made it all the way
to the finals, finishing in 2nd Place! Great Job, Girls!! (Formerly the Ina K Memorial...Click here for more info!)
The girls played very hard, and very well, in the first outdoor tournament of their young careers, and received several compliments from other coaches and parents on their skills, team play, and sportsmanship. Each team lost only one game, both to the eventual tournament champions, the Alaska Rush 00G Nike squad. In the championship game, the Starblast held the Rush scoreless in the first half and had a 1-0 lead midway through the second half before falling 4-1 in a game that was a lot closer than the final scored indicated. A great goal by Kiara Simpson and terrific defense and goalkeeping were highlights of the game for the Eclipse.
After the tournament, a player from each squad was selected by the coaches to receive the Ina K Award as the player best representing the qualities and spirit of Ina Kristiansen, an Alaskan soccer player for whom the tournament was named. Coach Kara and Coach Rory selected Grace Moore from the StarBlast for her dedication, punctuality & coachability and Maggie Zanazzo from the Starburst, citing her team spirit, determination, and leadership skills, calling her a third coach on the field! Congratulations to these girls for embodying the spirit of Ina K!
As we get ready for the outdoor season to begin,
we look forward to the girls representing Eclipse 2000
on the field as the Millennium Starburst
and the Millennium Starblast...
